The idea of having a digital sketchbook is great. I was even thinking of getting one. But the thing is: It doesn't have pressure sensitivity on the table, you can't use a pen, only your fingers, and besides there aren't many programs for drawing (the one I used is sketchbook pro, it's similar to Photoshop).
On the other hand I found out this [link]
ASUS-eee tablet, for artists.
The good thing: it has pressure sensitivity and you can use pen.
The bad thing: It doesn't have any colors!!
I'm really hoping next generation of tablets from these companies will take it to the next level.
For ASUS ,to use colors on the screen on the tablet and for Apple to put some pressure sensitivity on the tablet. It can be that hard. I'm sure Steve Jobs will be reading this and listen.
MEANWHILE I leave you with 2 sketches I made on Ipad.
Enjoy!

Also, check out the iTable from PQ Labs. It's not exactly in the house-hold cost range (running about $10,000), but it's amazing to see. And they have large USB multi-touch tablets that run around 2-3 grand. I'm considering saving up for one myself... ([link])
As far as PC tablet notebooks, though, I wouldn't bother investing in one. I had an HP myself, and it had a faulty vid-chip. A friend of mine had the Dell version, and the screen stopped working. In both cases, they couldn't be fixed. As far as notebooks go, definitely stick with Mac all the way. Though pricier than PC's, Axiotron's Modbook is well worth the money. ([link])
If you do, go Fujitsu . Dell and the other less expensive companies have them but you definitely get what you pay for... they're more susceptible to breakage.
A digi-sketchbook would rock, though. I can't believe it's taken them this long to come up with one. But to really make it sell, they need to find ways for it to be more convenient than paper/pencil portable sketching.
